Getting ready.....
We have less than four weeks before Baby #4 joins our family. We have been doing a lot of getting ready around here.....trying to dig out the baby stuff and get it washed up. We are getting pretty excited to meet this little guy. I say "little" and I hope that will be the case. We have another ultrasound on Friday to check this guy's weight. I am still measuring big and we are thinking we might have an Evan sized baby! We shall see in just a few weeks!
Tis the Season
It is officially "bath season". They find dirt wherever they go....and it looks like we are back to baths every night.
78
Yes, 78 degrees today. March 31. 78 degrees. Perfect weather!
Eli was so excited about his shorts and crocs.
And of course, when it is 78 degrees in March, there is nothing more perfect than squirt guns. Isaac couldn't wait to fill his up!
Eli is getting much more brave when it comes to bugs. Instead of screaming and freezing in his tracks, he is now smashing them and then getting close to them.

I love Donuts
I was thinking about how frustrated we are with Eli lately. Then I just thought of something so funny that he did last night. Ben and I were tucking him into bed. We had read books and we were saying our (first of many) goodnights.
Ben said, "Goodnight. I love you, Eli."
Eli said, "Goodnight. I love donuts."
Ben said, "Goodnight. I love you, Eli."
Eli said, "Goodnight. I love donuts."
Oh Eli
Eli is going through a phase right now....well I hope it is just a phase. He has been quite the challenge lately. He is fiesty as ever and sassy...
He has experienced a lot of changes lately and his world is about to be completely rocked. I hope this is not a preview of things to come. I hope he exits this phase as quick as he entered it and before baby comes.
He is saying stuff that completely cracks us up.
After I correct him, he responds "What I do, Mom?"
example...last night while I was cleaning up supper, he spit his milk all over the floor. I yelled "Eli!" and he responds "What I do, Mom?"
Last night, while helping Isaac, he intentionally tipped the trash can over. I said "Eli!" and he responds "What I do, Mom?"
Last night he colored all over his arm with a pen. I didn't even say anything, just looked at him with my "disappointed" look and he says "What I do, Mom?"
He knows darn well what "he do"
Another new one....after I said, "Eli, we don't take our diaper off unless you are in the bathroom." And he responds, "Yes I do"
"Eli, you don't spit on your baby brother (my belly)" and he responds, "Yes I do"
You get the picture.
It is so hard not to laugh when he looks at you and says "what I do, Mom?" or "yes I do" because really, he is right. I tell him we don't take our diaper off and he is telling me, yes, I do. He is exactly right....."we don't" or "you don't" but "yes, I do".
He has had a lot of changes in his life lately. He is in the transition between baby and big boy. He is in a big boy bed, he doesn't have a paci anymore and we are making him be more independent. I am trying to make him walk more and carry him less. We are trying to prepare him.....hopefully he will be adjusted before baby comes in 4 weeks!

Appointment today
Evan's appointment with the pediatric neurologist went pretty well today. Our concerns were confirmed. What is happening to him is real and has a name. The specialist said that Evan has a "Chronic Tic Disorder". It is on the same spectrum as Tourettes Syndrome. Tourettes has two components, a verbal and a motor tic. At this time, Evan is only displaying a motor component. He met the criteria of having the tic for at least a year and has not had a three month period without the tic. He has the tic at least once a day, and most times, multiple times.
As I mentioned before, we had noticed this with him, but thought it was just a bad habit. Over the course of the year, we have noticed it getting worse and to the point where his teacher mentioned her concern to us at conferences. She was also concerned about his "repeating/stuttering" which we hadn't noticed, or we were just used to it. Once she mentioned it to us, we did see what she meant. It happens especially when he is engaged in a conversation with you.
Anyway, in visiting with the doctor today, much of what he explained made a lot of sense to us. And much of it is what we see in Evan. He said there is a very strong correlation between Tic Disorder and Anxiety. Many of the diagnosed patients also struggle with ADHD, which we are thankful is not an issue with Evan. We can't really say that he has a lot of issues with anxiety other than he has a lot of perfectionist tendencies, especially at school. When we thought about it, Evan repeats himself or gets stuck on a sentence or word when he is telling a story or explaining something. It is almost like he has to repeat himself until he has the information correct, and he cannot move on until he has it right. His teacher had explained this to us, and I know at school, he is very concerned about doing the right thing and being a "perfect student" which explains why she noticed it a lot more than we did.
The research on Tic Disorder says that the symptoms usually present themselves between 5-7 years old. The symptoms peak around age 10-12. In 1/3 of the patients, the symptoms go away, 1/3 stay the same and 1/3 get worse. There is no medical reason that they can link to this and the specialist said that if they were to do a CAT scan or MRI, the brain would look completely normal. Treatments often include medication, but there are many side effects for the medications that are most effective. Most times, the Tic bothers parents and teachers more than the child.
At this time, we are not going to pursue the medication route. If it becomes worse in the future or begins to interrupt with his school success, then we can follow-up with the pediatric neurologist.
So, we didn't get a lot "done" today, but did get a lot of answers. It was pretty much what we had expected and we are thankful that in his neurological examination, nothing more was detected.

It's a Perfect Day to......
Play Chess and Checkers on the swingset fort.
We made a stop at Goodwill on our way home from Rochester today. Evan has been asking for a chess game for a while now and we happened to find one for $2.99 at Goodwill. He was soooo excited about it!

Tomorrow
I should be heading to bed, but I have a lot going through my mind right now. I haven't blogged about this yet, but decided this would be a good time. Tomorrow we are taking Evan up to Mayo Clinic for an appointment with a pediatric neurologist. He has a pretty significant "blinking" habit. It is very noticeable when he is talking to you, especially when he is telling a story. I began noticing it last school year. I noticed that he blinked a lot. We just figured it was a nervous habit that he had developed. I talked to his first grade teacher, but she did not think it was a problem or that it should be of great concern. This school year, it has gotten very noticeable and progressively worse. Ben and I noticed it getting more noticeable, but weren't quite sure what to do. His teacher brought it up at parent-teacher conferences. She was concerned as well, but wasn't quite sure what to do about it. It was then that I realized I wasn't "overreacting" as a mother and maybe we should look into it.
Between his teacher and us, we have not been able to determine when and why this happens. We have not been able to trace it to anything. It really doesn't happen more if he is tired, or nervous. He does do it more when he is talking, but also does it other times, such as when he is eating and playing. I had his eyes checked and he has 20/20 vision. I thought maybe his eyes were dry and scratchy. It doesn't seem to be the case. It is so painful for me to watch him. A lot of times, after school when we are driving home from daycare, he is talking about his day. I can see him in the rearview mirror and he gets blinking so bad, I literally have to look away because it makes me so sad and so concerned.
Just lately, we have noticed that his cheek and lip twitch with the blinking/winking as well. When the lip started twitching, too, Ben and I got very concerned. A couple of weeks ago when I had Eli into the doctor, I talked to her about it and asked for advice. It is hard to talk about it when Evan is around because I don't what him to feel bad about it or be self-conscious about it. He knows he does it, but says he can't help it. Our doctor suggested bringing him in and then she could refer us to a specialist. Last week we had an appointment with out family doctor and she was able to see what we were talking about.
The doctor was first going to try to get us in with a doctor at University of Iowa hospitals, but in doing that, we would have to go to a psychiatrist first and then be referred. They then tried to get us in to Mayo. On Friday, I received a call from our clinic that they (Mayo) could get us in either in June or on Monday. We took the Monday appointment. So, here we are.......
I am figuring we won't know anything tomorrow, but I think it will feel better to get the ball rolling. It is so scary to think of having something like this going on with your son mainly because we don't know why it is happening and why it is getting worse. I am hoping that we can get some things answered so we can eliminate some of the fear that we have. We are hoping it is something minor that can be corrected so Evan's self confidence and self esteem does not suffer. I asked him if he can feel it happening and he said he can. I asked if anyone ever says anything and he said that his friends ask about it, and he just tells him "this is just the way I am, I can't help it." He is so mature about everything!

Pacifier
Eli is addicted to his pacifier. He always begs for one and when he is home, he usually finds one and has it in his mouth. We try to limit it to bedtime and naps, but like I said, when we are home, he always seems to find one and sometimes it is just easier to let him have it than to fight him for it. Ben and I were pretty sure that he would be going to school with a paci in his pocket.
Last night the kids had a babysitter. I forgot to tell her that he has a pacifier in the cupboard. When I checked on him when we got home, I noticed that he was sleeping without one in his mouth. I figured he would wake up in the middle of the night wanting one, but just decided to see how it went. Surprisingly, he woke up this morning and hasn't really asked for one! He didn't get a nap today because we were celebrating Rhonda's birthday, but hasn't begged for one when he usually does (like in the car or at church). We put him to bed tonight without one and he did just fine.
I hate to get my hopes up, but maybe if Ben and I can follow-through with staying strong, we can get rid of his paci for good. We will see what the next few days bring. I am trying to hide all of the ones that I find around the house.

34 weeks
That's right....34 weeks. This is real and going to happen in 5 weeks or so. It is starting to be real....and I am starting to look HUGE!
Relax....
I think Eli is more ready to be a big brother everyday. He loves to talk to "Baby Brother" (which he is pretty sure is my belly button). Here he is talking to him while I was trying to relax and put my feet up. He has seen and felt my belly move, especially when he talks to it...he thinks it is hilarious!
Not sure why I thought I would actually be able to sit and relax....Here is Eli saying "Whoa, I'm falling. Catch me" His expressions were priceless!

Spring?
Could it be? We have had a couple of really nice days lately! Today it was 60 degrees when we got home from school so we had to take advantage of the great weather...
I think it is safe to say that Evan has grown a bit since last summer.....he can reach the monkey bars and the ground! He was quite surprised, as were Ben and I! He is just getting too big!
He is seriously growing up right before our eyes.
And Isaac of course had to check out the worm situation. He also was investigating some tracks that he was sure were deer tracks.
And there is no way in the world that this even looks safe! Ben and I left the boys for a couple minutes so we could get started on supper and we came back to this....Isaac has a bungee cord wrapped around himself and he is hooked to the monkey bars....

One on the mend...hopefully
Isaac has the biggest heart. He may not always show it, and he may not always act like it, but there are things that he does that just melt my heart. His teacher commented on his caring ways when we had his parent-teacher conferences. She said he would do anything for anyone. Most of the time that holds true. This is bothering him that both Eli and Evan have been sick. Really bothering him. He is doing his best to help take care of them. Last night he was watching a t.v. show that he had picked. He invited Eli up beside him, covered him up and then asked Eli if he wanted to watch his firetruck movie. Eli always wants to watch "firetruck" and the boys get so tired of it. It was so sweet of Isaac to ask Eli that.
Evan has been sick all day. He vomitted every 15 minutes throug the night and now about every hour all day long. Isaac was doing something and then came into the living room and put in Star Wars. Isaac never wants to watch Star Wars but knew it was Evan's favorite. He did this on his own, no prompting or asking. He just knew that it would make Evan feel better. He is such a sweetie.
Eli is still loving his bed. This is him this morning looking out the window at the rain. He is so proud of his bed! Last night he slept all night for the first time since he had gotten sick on Monday. He came out of his room this morning with a big smile on his face and said "I sleep in my big boy bed!"

Round Two
Not sure how things fell apart so quickly around here.....We had been so healthy all winter and then BAM...we got hit.
Eli had another trip back to the doctor yesterday. He still had a fever and was acting worse than when I took him the first time. After 3 doses of antibiotics, nothing was changing much. The doctor said she wanted to see him if his symptoms persisted. Ben took him back and the tested for influenza and RSV. Both came back negative, so it much just be another virus that has him down. Actually, he finally didn't have a fever last night and slept through the night. He is still sleeping this morning (7:30) so he must be doing better.
He is able to sleep in today because Evan has the stomach flu again. He just had it on Saturday and now he has been hit again. He has been vomiting/dry heaving every 20 minutes since 2 a.m. He is miserable! Poor guy. I just feel so bad for him. He is so good about it though. He just keeps saying "I wish this wasn't happening to me" Me too, Bud. I hate watching my kids be sick. I just feel so helpless and I hate it for them! We have had our fill this week and we are ready to be done with this. Hopefully this will be it.
It's been a long night! Ben was home yesterday, so I get sick duty today. I may have to stay pregnant for a few more days since I will be out of my sick leave by the end!

Never Again
....will I mention that the kids have been very healthy this winter! I totally jinxed our family by saying that. Evan had the flu over the weekend and Eli ended up sick on Monday. I took him to the doctor and he is on antibiotics. His lungs sounded full and had a rattle so the doctor wanted to put him on something for precaution. He has still had a fever at night for the past two nights. He is home with Ben today. He must have a virus or something. He was up for a couple hours in the middle of the night crying and burning up, so we kept him home. He still has a cough and runny nose and he just doesn't feel well. I am short on sick days because of my upcoming maternity leave so Ben gets sick duty today.
This morning at about 5:00, Isaac came into our room saying he was sick. We got him the bucket but he never did throw up. This is the same thing that Evan did on Saturday morning when he was sick. Isaac fell back asleep until 7 and jumped out of (our) bed and said he was better! Hmmm.....he acted totally fine, so we sent him to school. I am hoping that we don't get a call saying he got sick. He really was acting great and didn't look sick at all. We are thinking (hoping) he was just having a dream or something like that and he isn't really sick! We shall see......
So, if anyone asks again, I WILL NOT answer, "the kids have been very healthy so far". I know better than that!

Eli slept all night and woke up with a smile on his face!

Night One....
It was a success. Eli went right to sleep and didn't get up. Not sure what will happen if he wakes up in the middle of the night like he often does....but as far as the falling asleep part, it worked!
Big Boy Bed update....
Eli was so excited about his bed. He crawled up there when he had his jammies on and said to Ben "I think I need my pacy" We tucked him in, shut the light off and closed the door. It has been a half an hour and he hasn't come out.....
This may be too easy. Wonder how long the luck will last.
I can't believe Baby Eli is in a big boy bed! How did he grow up so fast?

Big Boy Bed
We moved the toddler bed into Eli's room today. He was pretty excited about it. Not sure how things will go when he actually had to sleep in it. We may give it a try tonight. I am still trying to decide if I have enough energy to attempt it!
He was so excited about his big boy bed!

He was so excited about his big boy bed!
I'm bummed this picture is blurry....his smile is priceless!
Apparently, Eli is going through another "stage."
He is a terror! We are not sure if it is just the 2 gong on 3 stage, or if this is just "Eli". By the time I got home last night, Ben said, "Eli is by far the most frustrating of all kids at any stage!" We are just having a heck of a time with him. It is so hard to explain, but he is just so defiant. He does things that he knows he shouldn't do. For example, yesterday he had chapstick. Ben asked what he was doing and he said, "just eating it." Sure enough, right after that, he took a bite out of it. He knows not to eat chapstick. It seems like we should be past this stage!
The other problem with this is that it is so hard to be mad at him. He talks so well and says the cutest things. He makes faces that just crack us up and it is so hard to get mad and not just laugh at him. He has just been so expressive lately and has quite the personality. We are hoping this naughty stuff is just a stage he is going through as we adjust to having Ben back now that wrestling is over.
We have 7 weeks until Baby is here.....we could be in for a wild ride!

Weekend
I was fortunate enough to get away for the weekend. I had a fabulous time in Minneapolis with some girlfriends. Lost of laughing, shopping and the company of great friends.....can't beat it!
I returned to reality last night.....
Evan has the flu. He has been throwing up since yesterday morning and still is not feeling well. He spent Friday night with a friend, but got sick on Saturday morning so he had to come home early Saturday morning.
My 32 hours of freedom was wonderful and refreshing but by the time I got home last night, Ben was ready for a break and I was quickly reminded of my most important life role as "Mom."
Today consists of laundry and more laundry!
